This fall, the SDSU Jackrabbit Youth Mentoring Club (JYMC), BCYMP’s campus affiliate, partnered with SMSU’s Sociology Club, Brookings Lowes, Sideline Productions, and Edgewood Vista to build four standing garden boxes for the Edgewood residents to plant next spring.
The clubs’ members, BCYMP Mentors and Mentees 8th grade or older, built the boxes with lumber that was donated or discounted from Lowes in space donated by Sideline Productions. “We appreciate our Community Partners and individuals willing to help BCYMP provide meaningful programming for our mentees, said Darla Biel, BCYMP’s Executive Director. Currently, 30 BCYMP Mentees are in 8th grade or older. “It’s important to me and to our mission that we continue to provide more opportunities for our Mentors and Mentees to ‘give back’ to others,” Biel added.
In her thank you note, Jody Hexem, Life Enrichment Coordinator at Edgewood, expressed gratitude on behalf of Edgewood’s residents and staff, stating the boxing will offer, “meaningful purposeful activity” for the residents. “Thank you for enriching our lives,” she wrote.
Volunteering and collaborative efforts enrich all our lives. Thank you to all those involved and who made this project happen.
